Who Could Have Hacked the Locked iPhone for FBI and How?

The FBI has now retrieved the data from the locked iPhone 5C used by San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook after getting help from an unnamed "third party"(hint: it wasn't Apple).

The FBI hasn't officially confirmed who this third party is, but it's become plainly evident that the Bureau has enlisted the help of an Israeli software forensics company called Cellebrite. According to Cellebrite's website, the company provides forensics solutions which can "give access to and unlock the intelligence of mobile data sources to extend investigative capabilities, accelerate investigations, unify investigative teams and produce solid evidence." The company further boasts that it employs high-tech methods capable of extracting data from all types of feature phones and smartphones. It is said that the FBI may have signed a $15,278 contract with Cellebrite to open Syed Farook's Apple iPhone 5c.

But how did they do it?
Digital forensics expert Bradley Schatz — an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Queensland University of Technology who also runs a consulting firm — says speculation has been rife in tech circles, with two possible theories proving to be the most popular.
1. They finds a new bug in iOS 9.x
Dr Schatz says the FBI could have taken the exploitation route — as in they loaded some foreign software onto the phone to let them in. From Cellebrite, it's unlocking capability supports the following devices: iPhone 4S / 5 / 5C, iPad 2 / 3G / 4G,iPad mini 1G, and iPod touch 5G running iOS 8.x. However, the shooter's iPhone 5c is said to run on iOS 9.x. So it is a big challenge for Cellebrite to discover the new bugs in iOS 9.x.
2. They copied the chip
For iPhone running iOS 9.x, users can opt to erase their data after the wrong passcode is entered more than 10 timesThis was a big concern for the FBI, as they couldn't have been sure they would be able to try more than nine passcodes without wiping the iPhone's data. But Dr Schatz says authorities could have copied the phone's flash storage chip so they could make as many attempts as they wanted to.

How to Fix Freezing Links from Safari, Mail and Messages in iOS 9.3 or Lower

If your iPhone gets freezing or crashing after you click a link from Safari, Chrome, Email, messages, and other apps like whatsapp, you’re not alone. In the Apple support forums and Twitter, tons of users are reporting the bug, which seems more prevalent on updating to iOS 9.3.

What is Going On?
In iOS 9 Apple introduced Universal Links, these allow app developers to associate their website and app, so links to the website can open the app up automatically if installed. For example, following a link to a Guardian article opens up the Guardian app to that specific article instead of their website.

Why is It Freezing?
It looks like there is a bug in iOS that completely breaks the Universal Links if it gets served an app association file that's too large.
Benjamin Mayo of 9to5mac.com reported installing the Booking.com app consistently broke their test devices - which led Steve Troughton-Smith (who else...) to take a peep at their association file.
In fact, this problem is not new. The bug has existed in every version of iOS 9, from the very beginning. Booking.com or other apps just happened to update their association file Last Week to a version that triggered the bug. It has nothing whatsoever to do with iOS 9.3.

How to fix iOS 9+ Safari/Mail/Messages Link Bug?
If you've got the bug, you can follow these steps to fix the issue whilst we wait for a full update from Apple. You'll need to hook your iPhone or iPad up to your computer and sync with iTunes.
  1. If you still have it installed, delete the Booking.com app from your device (or other apps you've recently updated caused the problem)
  2. Turn on Airplane Mode
  3. Plug your device into your computer and open iTunes
  4. Turn your device off and on
  5. Make sure you have the Booking.com app (or other apps) in iTunes on your computer - download link
  6. Keep Airplane Mode on!
  7. In iTunes, sync the Booking.com app to your device
    1. Select your iOS device in iTunes
    2. Change to the Apps tab
    3. Search for Booking.com and press install
    4. Press Sync
  8. Wait for the sync to finish, then open the Booking.com app on your device
  9. Force close the Booking.com app by double tapping the home button and swiping up
  10. Force close Safari by double tapping the home button and swiping Safari up
  11. Delete the Booking.com app
  12. Turn off Airplane Mode
  13. Open Safari - your links should work again! It'll also fix any problems with links from other apps like Mail or Messages.
You may need to try this a few times for it to work, it seems like a specific timing needs to occur for the correct caches to clear. Or turning off JavaScript on Safari may also help after you tried the steps above. To turn off JavaScript, go to Setting > Safari > Advanced >JavaScript. Another quick fix is to use private browsing of SafariWhat's more, you can also use other iOS browsers such as Firefox or Puffinbrowser which are not hit by this bug.
